We're here at NAB 2015. We're at the G-tech Booth. We have Greg here. Greg is one of my favorite people to interview and mainly the reason why is because I call him sort of the clown car of exhibitionists or presenters because he's going to pull out probably no less than 5 to 10 drives out of his pockets somewhere.

Greg Crosby: You're setting big expectations now.

PostProduction.Com: I know. Don't let me down, man.

Greg: Let me see. I'll have to do some of those smoke and mirrors here. It is Vegas though.

PostProduction.Com: Is it? All right. Let's see what's up now. We interviewed you guys at Cinegear.

Greg: Yes.

PostProduction.Com: I know you made some changes. You have some things that have been happening and you're talking about them here at the show. What's been released since back then at Cinegear?

Greg: Oh , quite a lot of things. G-Technology, we're all about performance, style, reliability. We're also focused really on that creative community and really optimizing how people are using storage, optimizes that workflow. One of the things that we introduced last year was our Evolution Series ecosystem. Since our time at Cinegear we've actually introduced some new products to kind of expand that whole EV Series ecosystem that we've created. So I kind of want to talk to you about some of those things and show you that, and also I can show you some of the really cool high-capacity storage that we have going on as well.

PostProduction.Com: That sounds cool.

Greg: So right behind you is the heart of the system -- the Evolution Series ecosystem. What it's actually made up of, and I am going to start pulling things out of my pockets...

PostProduction.Com: ...this is one.

Greg: A variety of different modules. The beauty of the ecosystem is that we have very different performance levels and capacity levels for the drives. We have everything from 1TB 7200 rpm drive to 500GB capacities as well. We also have really fast SSD versions that give you 512GB capacity and awesome performance. This is up to 480MB/s with that solution.

We even have a slightly big brother I like to call it. This is our G-Drive ev 220. Basically you can see from the height perspective, it's a slightly taller drive but it gives you lots of capacity and lots of performance. Now again on the back, you see USB 3.0 and it has this really great interface that's on the back set up. Allows you to go into a variety of different docks and accessories, one of those being -- something that we've been shipping for sometime -- are G-Dock ev with Thunderbolt. And it takes advantage of that fast, Thunderbolt interface to be able to connect and access to the drives very, very quickly.

Now, another great thing, and this is actually the new stuff, and I'll show you some really cool things. We've added some new modules as well. This is our G-Drive ev RaW. The RaW basically stands for rugged and lightweight. It's actually 35% lighter than our original G-Drive ev modules that we have. It still takes advantage of those fast 7200 rpm drives inside of it, but the benefit here is that you get this really lightweight drive and we've wrapped around this really protective cool, blue bumper to be able to protect the drive. This actually withstand a 1.5 meter drop on the carpeted concrete.

Now we want it to be really to take kind of the next level as it relates to providing a rugged drive and that's what I actually really want to show you, Noland. Show you some of the cool things that it can do.

PostProduction.Com: I know somebody out there right now is going, "Can I get that in a different color than blue?"

Greg: You can't. Today it's only in blue, and it's kind of, blue is that new color that you want to be able to have out there in the market.

PostProduction.Com: Exactly.

Greg: What we also have is our G-Drive ev ATC. ATC stand for all terrain case. Now this is going to take that ruggedness to a whole another level. Basically what we have here -- as you can see I just opened it up -- we have that same G-Drive ev RaW module that goes inside of it. Now what you do is that you place it into the case, close it up, and now you have a protective barrier around that drive. So, now you have something that actually can withstand a 2-meter drop on a carpeted concrete -- as I'll show you here in a second -- it also provides a water-tight drive compartment so if you happen to spill your beer, throw into a lake, it actually can be submerged up to a foot of water for 30 seconds and even if it does get underwater, it actually will float back up to the surface which is really cool.

PostProduction.Com: So, let me pause here real quick. So you said it can be underwater for up to 30 seconds a foot down. What if it's floating on top, is there any limit on that?

Greg: No. We've tested it and we tested it for a long time. I'm not going to sit out there in the lake for a long, long time, but basically, it can stay sealed when it's above the surface or on the surface of the water.

PostProduction.Com: Wow. That's cool.

Greg: Now, what's also really cool about it is that it also withstands 1,000 pounds of real pressure. So, if actually, an SUV happens to run over it while you're out hiking in the jungle, you can be sure that the data is still protected as well.

Now, with this protection wrapped around it, you still want to be able to access the data, so what we have is a tethered Thunderbolt cable to be able to access all the data directly to the drive. And then we also have a USB version of it as well. The Thunderbolt version is actually shipping today. It retails for $229. It comes with that 1TB drive and this protective case offered $229.

As I mentioned that I'm not going to pull out, you know, that's 5 to 10 drives, but, I will drop it for you.

PostProduction.Com: You will drop it.

Greg: Yeah, so, as you can see here, I'm about 6 feet, that's about the length of 2 meters. I'll drop the drive. Falls. Comes up. And I'll plug it in and I'll show you, it actually does work.

PostProduction.Com: Cool. You've been dropping this probably all week long, haven't you?

Greg: Of course, yeah. Step on it, drop it, chuck it.

PostProduction.Com: Have you driven over it, you know with the truck?

Greg: I haven't personally driven over it with the truck, but I've seen lots of videos. Actually, one of our resellers in the UK actually drove over it with a Rolls Royce. I thought that was pretty fancy.

PostProduction.Com: Yeah that is very fancy.

Greg: And pretty cool. But we are continuing to expand this whole Evolution Series ecosystem, and I'm going to show you a couple of things that I'm going to pull out of my pocket. This will be Number 2.

We do recognize that people are still using FireWire as an interface and so the people that have those old G5 Mac towers, they don't have USB 3.0, they can't get Thunderbolt but they still want access to this really cool technology. And then maybe they've migrated up to some of that new Thunderbolt technology that's out there. So what we've actually created here is just a small little adapter. It's called our ev Series adapter. It's a FireWire adapter so you have dual FireWire ports on the back and it plugs directly into the drive. So the great thing is that for all those people that still have that legacy connections, they can still integrate the whole Evolution Series into their workflow.

Another kind of thing too that I want to show you and I'm going to kind of move over this direction. You know one of the new products that we've introduced, actually at the end of last year, is our G-Speed Studio XL. This is part of our G-Speed family providing lots of capacity and high performance. This is actually an 8-drive RAID solution. This one actually is a little bit special. It's special in the sense of normally this comes with 8-drives, so you get up to 64TB total capacity, transfer rates of over 1300/s. Now, this, we're trying to integrate the whole Evolution Series ecosystem so what we've created is this carrier that actually can go inside the XL. So somebody can really customize their solution, you know, do a 6-drive RAID as an example, with two of these carriers, and then when they're out in the field capturing all these content, or they're on set, they can come back, take their modules and just plug it directly into the XL, and offload and backup and just go straight to their edit.

PostProduction.Com: Pop it in, basically pop it back out, and you're ready to go.

Greg: And you're ready to go. So it's really great. So, lots of really cool things that we have come in. We're taking advantage of that faster technology with Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2 in particular, with access to really cool high-performance drives. G-Technology is really delivering on that performance, style and reliability.

PostProduction.Com: Did you give a price point on this?

Greg: No. So, pricing wise, this starts off at 24TB in terms of total capacity, that starts at $3600 and to get 64TB which is a huge amount of storage, that retails for $7000 which is a really great price for that amount of capacity.

PostProduction.Com: Everything is shipping now? Is there anything that is not?

Greg: Everything is shipping today, outside of these -- a couple of these things. This is actually a prototype so a lot of people are just seeing this the first time for the show. And the FireWire adapter is actually going to be shipping within the next month.

PostProduction.Com: For all that detailed information, go to is it gtechnology.com?

Greg: It's actually g-technology.com so G hyphen technology dot com.

PostProduction.Com: Just like that dot com.

Greg: Just like my shirt, yeah.

PostProduction.Com: Cool. Awesome. Well, Greg, always a pleasure finding out what you got going on and I know we only had two drives come out of the pocket today but I know that forthcoming interviews you probably have a lot more stocked up in there.

Greg: Come see me at Cinegear , I'll have some more stuff to pull out of the pocket.

PostProduction.Com: Oh, you will...

Greg: Yeah.

PostProduction.Com: Cool. Well, thanks again for your time. We really appreciate it.

Greg: Cheers. Thank you Noland.

PostProduction.Com: Thanks.
